How Sungrabber Heats your Pool using Solar Engery

  • The system is designed to be installed horizontally (20' long panels) or vertically (10' and 12' long panels)
  • Your pool pump sends unheated water from the pool through the patented polymer solar collectors in the Sungrabber Solar Pool Heater.
  • The solar collectors transfer the sun's heat to the water as the water flows through them.
  • Warm, solar-heated water flows back into your pool and continuously circulates until it reaches the desired temperature.
  • During the day, between 2°F and 5°F of heat is added each time your pool water circulates through the solar panel(s).
  • If your pool water is too warm, circulate the pool water through the solar panel at night to cool your pool!

Why is Sungrabber your best Choice?

SunGrabber's patented tube-to-tube construction and water metering system provides even flow and heating along the entire width and length of the solar panel. These features eliminate inefficient hot spots associated with other solar brands.

  1. Pool water enters the header and travels through the metering holes into the subplenum without creating excessive additional backpressure on the pool pump.
  2. The subplenum evenly distributes pool water simultaneously to every panel tube.
  3. The pool water then flows down the panel creating a fully-wetted surface that is in touch with the sun's solar heat.
  4. A balanced fully-wetted surface optimizes transfer of the sun's available solar heat to your pool water.

Your Pool

An effective solar pool heating system can be installed for almost any pool in any location. Your Sungrabber dealer is the best resource to determine the ideal installation for your individual home and pool configuration.

In addition to where you live, there are a number of factors that are considered when optimizing a solar pool heating system.

Factor 1: What is the ideal orientation for solar collectors?

Orientation Explanation
South The ideal orientation for your solar collectors is a south-facing pitched roof,
near the pool, with enough space for mounting the required number of collectors.
West An installation on a west-facing roof works well for summer heating,
in some installations the collector area may need to be increased.
East Eastern exposures tend to be less effective and, therefore, less economical.
Increasing the collector area is the recommended approach for an eastern orientation.
North Northern exposures are not usually recommended,
except in certain areas of the country.

The modular nature of the solar collector makes it easy to tailor the system to a specific site. Be certain that the orientation you select is not shaded by trees or other structures. Remember, the effectiveness of a solar system is directly dependent on the amount of direct sunlight that the solar collectors receive.

Factor 2: What is the best inclination for the solar collectors?

Season Inclination
Year-Round Equal to the latitude of the installation location. For example, the collectors for an installation in Tampa, Florida would be a 27-degree angle since Tampa is located at 27 degrees latitude.
Summer Equal to the latitude minus 10 to 15 degrees.
Winter Equal to the latitude plus 10 to 15 degrees.

Factor 3: How many solar collectors will I need for an inground pool?
The "rule of thumb" for sizing a solar pool heating system is 60% to 80% of the pool's surface area in solar collectors. For example, a 480 square foot pool (32 feet by 15 feet) needs 288 to 384 square feet of solar collector area.
